A boy scores 9 marks more than his friend in an exam and has 56% marks of the total of their marks. Calculate the marks scored by each of them.
Answer / Dhirendra Shukla
Let A be the boy's score, B be his friend's score, and T be the total score. Then we have A = (0.56 * T) + 9 and A+B=T. Solving these equations gives A=(0.56/2)*(A+B)+9 and T = A + B. Substituting the first equation into the second one gives T^2 - (1.56*A - 9)T - 3*A^2 - 18.9*A = 0. Solving for T we get T≈76.17 and A≈42.08, which means the boy scored approximately 42 marks and his friend scored approximately 42-9=33 marks.
