LDAP servers store a hierarchical directory of information. In LDAP parlance, a fully-qualified name for a directory entry is called a Distinguished Name. Unlike DNS (Domain Name Service) FQDN's (Fully Qualified Domain Names), LDAP DN's store the most significant data to the right.

LDAP stands for Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. In plain and simple terms, its a database whereby it has all the details of all of organizations, individuals, and other resources such as files and devices in a network, whether on the Internet or on corporate intranetand whether or not you know the domain name, IP address, or geographic whereabouts. An LDAP directory can be distributed among many servers on a network, then replicated and synchronized regularly. An LDAP server is also known as a Directory System Agent (DSA). This is correct and we have one more reason that in LDAP we have one concept called updated thread pooling i.e. LDAP protocol has some predefined threads and these threads are dedicated to perform most of the queries comes from the client side.
So it won't use much system resources to resolve the client query that why it is called lightweight protocol.

Why LDAP is called light weight?..

Answer / nimesh maru

Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) is an Internet
protocol for accessing distributed directory services that
act in accordance with X.500 data and service models. LDAP
is an extensible protocol.
Ldap is a client /Server protocol used to access network
directories such as microsoft active directory or NDS.These
directories follow the x.500 standard. The first iteration
of this protocol, Directory access Protocol(DAP) was created
to be front-end client for x.500 directory services. The
idea was that it would be the interface for every service
provided by a directory that followed the x.500 standard.
The x.500 standard ended up being too complex to actually
fully implement, and DAP also was extremely complex and
resource hungry. Scince it is striped down version it is
know as Lightweight.
