Basically db is a term used to compare two quantities. when we say for ex. 3db gain or loss ,it means the signal now has a value equal to twice of previous value in case of gain and half of previous value. in contrast to this dbm is used to represent absolute value for ex. 0 dbm equals 1 mW.
