it was a typo mistake ..
( 60 + 480)/2 = 270

Answer = 260
let x be the original number and y be the resultant number
then , from the given conditions
8x = y
and
270 - x = y - 270
=> 270 - x = 8x - 270
=> 9x = 540
=> x = 60
and y = 480
hence average of the two numbers = 260
