The number 120 comes from the number of tooth on a propeller (or gear) in an electric motor. Originally, the formula for frequency was derived based on the number of rotations per minute (RPM) of the motor's propeller or gear. As motors evolved and their design parameters changed, the 120 constant remains as a historical convention.
