Let me to tell with one example:
Go to transaction code ob52(define open and closed posting
periods) we will define from period 1 to 12 for our fiscla
year instead of giving 1 to 12 give 1 to 3,
and try to post the transaction with f-02 with period 4 you
get the error message that "posting period 004 in currnet
year not open".. it means the periods which your
transactions are made has to be open.

when u post a transaction for a paticular month,eg- march.
than the posting period is open for march only, and the
past and the future periods are closed, in likewise whn
march will end up, than the system will automatically open
posting period for april and march will be closed. in this
way it function.

We can maintain 12 normal and 4 special periods in SAP. With
the transaction code OB52 we can open and close posting
periods. Open posing period means we can post the documents
in that period and closing posting period means we cannot
post documents in that posting periods.

In case u post an entry through f-02, it is related to April
month transaction.In sap for this purpose gives the open and
closing posting periods.For particular transaction for
particular period we use the open and closing posting
periods and it is the month end activity i.e every month u
open that particular month as a open period and close that
month.

If you want to post transactions you need open the
particular period and to stop posting transactions to a
particular month you need close that particular period.
This way you can control posting of transcations.
