why do we enter payroll area twice in payroll driver

They are in 2 different sections a) PY period b) Selection
PY period : is used to determine Payroll period eg weekly ,
biweekly or monthly [ ie. you can also choose to run an
biweekly employee in a weekly period ]
Selection : is used to select the EE/PERNR's for whom PY
needs to be run [ you cannot make a choice here if you have
PY area for New Jersey monthly EE's you cannot select New
York monthly EE's Or New York weekly EE's here ]
Typically both the selections need to be entered as same PY
areas , variation of PY area under PY period selection is
only used for testing not in production.

one is for selection of the payroll area and the period for which payroll run is to be executed.
the second field is for the set of pernrs for whom the payroll run is going to be done.in the personnel selection,payroll area entering is not mandatory
