a)If column dimensions are 250*400mm , what will be
cutting length for 8mm stirrups and how to calculate it? b)
If beam dimensions are 200*400mm , beam coveris 25mm , slab
cover is 20mm , what will be the cutting length for
stirrups? c)Column dimensions are 250*400mm , reinf. is
12nos. bar of 16mm dia , stirrups provided are two legged,
what will be the length of each ring?

Answer

Given Data : Column size = 250x400 Clear Cover = 40 mm Dia of Stirrup = 8 mm
Ans: To calculate cutting length first we determine the lengths A and B
So A = 250-2x40+2x(half dia of stirrup) = 250-80+2x4 = 178
B = 400-2x40+2x(half dia of stirrup) = 400-80+2x4 = 328
Deductions : For bents up we must deduct the values that for
45 degree bent = 1d
90 degree bent = 2d
135 degree bent = 3d where d = dia of stirrup
here in our case for the hooks there are 2 bends of 135 degree each
for the stirrup there are 3 bends of each 90 degree
so deductions = 2x3xd + 3x2xd = 2x3x8 + 3x2x8
Addings up ---> we have to add up hook lengths here in our case each hook length = 12 d so for 2 hooks the hook length = 12d+12d = 24d
So now the actual cutting length = 2(A+B)-2x3x8-3x2x8+24x8
= 2(178+328)-2x3x8-3x2x8+24x8
= 1012-48-48+192 = 1108 = 1.108 m.

Please tell me the difference between nominal and clear
cover. Thanks.

Answer

clear cover is distance between concrete extreme fibre to the outer face of the main reinforcement which one only is the correct definition to clear cover and no other definitions are not fitted reg
