There are three major deamons in Veritas Volume Manager;
1. vxconfigd
2. vxiod
3. vxrelocd

RAID For Redundancy purpose high availability of disks.
RAID 1 is best it have mirroring and high data secure.
Raid 5 i prefer it use parity type only 3/4 memory but high availability of data
