Now x/40+x/30=8 (time=distance/speed)
Solving this for x we get. x=960/7
therefore, x=137(approx)

No need to overcomplicate this.
Your formula of time=distance/speed is correct, which means distance=(time)(speed).
The slowest speed he will be driving in a day is 30mph, which limits his distance more than 40mph. Therefore, 30mph is the only speed that needs to be taken into account. With this, we can conclude:
D=(T)(S)
D=(8hr)(30mph)
D=240miles
240 miles is the furthest he can travel home on Sunday, which is the furthest he should travel for his picnic.
