Strain gauge.
A load cell is a transducer that converts applied weight
into an electrical signal. This kind of conversion is most
commonly accomplished using stain gauges bonded to a cell
and connected in a bridge configuration. Some load cells
include signal conditioning, but most appear as full-bridge
configurations. These require DC excitation and return a
voltage proportional to the applied weight and the level of
excitation. Specifications for most load cells include
required excitation levels, output sensitivity in mV/V,
weight, range and resolution. The accuracy of these cells
is often specified at better than 0.05% of full scale. In
practice, the accuracy of a load cell depends on a number
of factors, including the cell's method of construction,
environmental effects and the way in which the load is
applied
