After change the physical file,the corresponding field reference file is not changed,it holds the attributes of the older pf(before change).CHGPF (field refernce file) command helps to get a new attributes of the the physical file.

when you refering any physical file for attributes of
fields to any file and you made any changes in the
reference file that will applicable to both the files
(refered and reference).
