12 1/2% of each month's rent aside for repairs, pays Rs.1660
as annual taxes and realizes 10% on his investment

Since In question ,taxes are calculated on annual basis, therefore we have to calculate on year basis .
Number of month in a year = 12
let the rent = x
therefore rent = 12x

(income on yearly basis) - (given 12.5 % on rent) - (year basis) = (10 % on investment(500000))
12x-12.5 of 12x -1660 = 10 % on investment(500000)

12.5 percent of x multiplied by 12 +rs.1660+10 percent of x =12x.
Rs.51660=12x- 3x/2.
