Difference between Defect Removal efficiency and Defect
containment effectiveness
Answer / abhishek
Normally in all the forums, you will find these two terms
used interchangebly, so they seems same, except in some
cases effecciency is considering some more parameters of
defects like weitage based on defect severity and type.
As per my understanding this is the difference -
Defect Containment Effectiveness = Defect Found under a
phase (say Testing)
--------------------------------------------------- x 100
Defect cound under same phase (say Testing) + Defects found
under following phases (Say UAT, post production defects)
Defect removal effeciency = Defect removal effectiveness
----------------------------
Cost (Effort) involved in
Testing phase
E.g. if my effectivess is 80% and I spend 100 hr in
testing. Then my effeciency of defect removal is .8 per hr.
If I improve my effectiveness say it's now 90% but still
with same efforts say 100 hr. Then my effeciency will be
0.9 per hr, which is a indication of my improved effeciency.
But If I took 200 hr and achieve effectiveness of 90%, then
my actual effeceincy is 0.45 which is a drop. It make sense
because I can't keep on spending hrs and hrs on a testing
phase just to increase my effectivess, so yes my
effectivess migh increase but effort I spend will ultimate
bring down my effeciency....
Again it's my own understanding and feel free to suggest
your opinion on this.
Cheers !
