When designing a flat switched network you can have:
A. the same number of IP and IPX nodes without performance
degradation
B. more IP than IPX nodes on the same segment
C. more IPX than IP nodes on the same segment
D. more AppleTalk than IP nodes on the same segment
Answer / guest
Answer: A
This is a very deceiving question because all the answers
can be right. Our best guess would be A. If you use the
table below, you can see that in a mixed environment that
the maximum number of workstations that you can use per
segment shouldn?t exceed 200. If that?s the case, we could
have 150 IP workstations and 50 IPX workstations, which
would make B correct. Or, we could have 150 IPX workstations
and 50 IP workstations, which would make C correct. You get
the picture by now. So, we chose A in assuming that you
could have 100 IP workstations and 100 IPX workstations
without performance degradation.
Protocol Maximum Number of Workstations per segment
IP 500
IPX 300
AppleTalk 200
NetBIOS 200
Mixed 200
However, make note of this for the exam: If answer B said
?more IP than IPX nodes on the same segment without
performance degradation? we would have chosen that answer
because there is less broadcast traffic with IP nodes.
