I appreciate your interest in purchasing a new pen from
XYZ. As you can imagine we have many different styles and
price ranges for pens, so I need to understand what it is
that you are looking for. Once we have discussed what it
is you prefer, we can decide if we are a match to do
business. If we are not, tell me, and I appreciate your
time and will allow you to be on your way. If we are a
match, tell me, and we can proceed. What I would like to
avoid is an "I don't know" type of answer when what you
really mean is a polite way of telling me "no". Does that
sound fair? Assuming we are a match, what happens next?

Tell me about the last pen you had. What did you like
about it? If you could change one thing about it what
would it be? Do you want the same pen? What color ink do
you prefer? Is pen grip important to you? I assume you
don't have a budget for this pen? Will you be making the
final decision or will someone be making this decision with
you? Is this the pen you prefer?
