NetBIOS (Network Basic Input/Output System) and NetBEUI (Network Banyan Extended User Interface) are two older networking protocols used primarily in local area networks. NetBIOS is a session layer protocol, while NetBEUI operates at the network access layer. Both protocols were developed for Microsoft LAN Manager and later implemented by other vendors.
