Why is it that the nearer we approach the sun, the colder it
becomes ?

The higher we go above sea-level the rare is the atmosphere;
and the rarer the air, the colder it is. Therefore when we
approach nearer to the sun, it must be colder than we remain
at level and are farther from the sun.
