Explain The ATM reference model

Explain The ATM reference model..

Answer / Gaurav Mathur

The Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) reference model is a layered communication model used in ATM networks. It consists of five layers, from bottom to top:

1. Physical layer: responsible for the physical transmission of data across the network
2. ATM layer: responsible for cell transfer, including segmenting and reassembling data into fixed-size cells (53 bytes) and providing flow control
3. AAL (ATM Adaptation Layer): responsible for adapting the data to meet the requirements of the ATM layer and providing additional services such as segmentation, concatenation, and padding
4. LLC (Logical Link Control): responsible for network-specific functions such as error control, flow control, and framing
5. Application layer: responsible for end-to-end communication between different applications
