Answer / Jayant Pushker
A cyclotron is a type of particle accelerator used to accelerate charged particles, such as protons and alpha particles, to high speeds. It consists of two hollow D-shaped electrodes called dees that are placed in a static magnetic field.
1. The particles are injected into the space between the dees and travel along the axis perpendicular to the magnetic field.
2. An oscillating electric field is applied across the gap between the dees, causing the particles to move from one dee to another while their velocity increases.
3. As the particles travel in a spiral path, they gain energy due to the increasing radius of the orbit and can be deflected out of the cyclotron through small magnetic or electric lenses to strike a target.
