let present father & son age is X and Y
from Question after 2 years father age is X+2
X+2=42
X=42-2=40..............(1)
agin,
from Question ago 4years father age is (X-4) & son age is (Y-4)
X-4=9(Y-4)
or X-4=9y-36
or X-9y=-36+4
or 40-9y=-32 [from eq. (1) x=40]
or -9y=-32-40
or y=-72/-9
or y=8
