I dont think above answer is correct...
Excel report will not have any merged cells whereas report
created in crystal report (Then exported to excel) will
have lots of merged cell and make post reporting analysis
little bit difficult.

As every Windows OS has Microsoft Excel reports and as it is simple, people are familiar with it.
It has formula field in it to do calculations.

Here is the right answer:
they are 2 ways to export the report to excel format
1. export to excel-where the report along wth the fields
will exported to excel and then fit in the cells of the
excel file
2. export to excel-data only-where only the data of the
report is exported to excel and provides good readability
