Examine the impact of industrialization on demography, urbanization and family in 19th century Europe?
Answer Posted / Sankatesh Raman
Industrialization in 19th century Europe led to significant changes in demography, urbanization, and family structures. Demographically, there was a shift from rural areas to urban centers due to the labor demand in factories. This rapid urbanization resulted in overcrowded living conditions, poor sanitation, and increased mortality rates (urbanization disease theory). However, industrialization also led to medical advancements that improved life expectancy. The family structure transformed as well. Traditional extended families broke down due to migration for work, leading to nuclear families becoming more common. Women's roles also changed as they began to work in factories, although their wages were often lower and work conditions poorer than men's.
