To find the total number of participants, we can use the fact that Rahul is 1/5 ahead of one participant (let's call this person A) and 5/6 behind another participant (let's call this person B). Since A is ahead of Rahul by a fifth of his own distance, A must be at least 5 times as fast as Rahul. Similarly, since Rahul is five sixths behind B, B must be at most six fifths as fast as Rahul. As A and B are participants in the race and faster than Rahul, there must be at least one other participant who is neither ahead of nor behind Rahul. So, the total number of participants is at least 3 (Rahul, A, and this other participant).
