What is residual payment and part payment?

residual amount is the amount which is remaining payable
against the invoice after adjusting the paid amount showing
only single line as a open item.

Partial payment:if you are appling the payment through
partial payment, system will keep the original invoice as a
open item and show the paid amount as a second line against
the invoice with clearing document number.
