Why dies a cyclist and the cycle fall forward, if he applies
the brakes suddenly ?

When the cycle is in motion actually the cyclist is also moving along with the cycle .Therefore when the brake is applied ,the cycle gets slower but the cyclist continue to be in its state of motion due to the property of matter called inertia .
