RAID stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks and it
basically involves combining two or more drives together to
improve the performance and the fault tolerance. Combining
two or more drives together also offers improved
reliability and larger data volume sizes. A RAID
distributes the data across several disks and the operating
system considers this array as a single disk.

RAID (redundant array of independent disks; originally RAID
is a way of storing the same data in different places
(thus, redundantly) on multiple hard disks. By placing data
on multiple disks, I/O (input/output) operations can
overlap in a balanced way, improving performance. Since
multiple disks increases the mean time between failures
(MTBF), storing data redundantly also increases fault
tolerance.

RAID refers to a hard disk technology which can be used to
speed up data transfer and/or provide disk redundancy
through disk system fault tolerance. RAID provides these
features by utilizing more than one hard disk at a time,
there are several variations of a RAID configuration
referred to as levels. Each of these levels provides
different performance and/or fault tolerance benefits. RAID
configurations are commonly found in data critical applications.
