IP addresses are 32 bit long and are used in the source
and destination address fields of IP packets. The purpose
of the IP address is that not only identifying the
individual devices but also to identify the host to the
network.
Class A: If the first bit of IP address is 0,it is the
address of class A.The next 7 bits identify the network and
the last 24 bits identify the host. There are fewer than 128
class A network numbers, but each class A network can be
composed of millions of hosts.
Class B: If the first 2 bits of IP address is 1 0,it is
the address of class B.The next 14 bits identify the
network and the last 16 bits identify the host. There are
thousands of class B network numbers and each class B
network can be composed of thousands of hosts.
Class C: If the first 3 bits of IP address is 1 1 0,it is
the address of class C.The next 21 bits identify the
network and the last 8 bits identify the host. There are
millions of class C network numbers and each class C
network can be composed of fewer than 254 hosts.

An IP address is an Internet Protocol address. It is used to
identify all the websites on the internet. Each IP address
is unique and it is separated by periods. For example :
124.2.3.5 . It ranges from 0 to 255. Each and every website
have an IP address. For example, an IP address for
Google.com is 216.239.59.147 and that is how the internet
identifies it. Generally, ip address is very difficult to
remember by the visitors. So, they type domain name (
google.com/yahoo.com etc ) in the browser and it is
converted to the destination address . This conversion
process is done by DNS ( Domain name system / Domain Name
Server ). There are two types of ip addresses:
1. Private Ip address
2. Public Ip address
Private ip address is also known as internal ip of your
computer. To get the ip address of a computer use the
following steps:
start->run->cmd-> ipconfig
or
start->run->cmd->ipconfig/all It shows your internal ip
address. Public or external ip address is used to access the
internet. Private ip address range is as follows :
Class A(Netid.hostid.hostid.hostid) : 1.0.0.0 to 126.0.0.0
Class B(Netid.Netid.hostid.hostid) : 128.0.0.0 to 191.0.0.0
Class C(Netid.Netid.Netid.hostid) : 192.0.0.0 to 223.0.0.0
Class D(Multicast) : 224.0.0.0 to 239.0.0.0
Class E(For Research) : 240.0.0.0 to 255.0.0.0
Public ip address ranges from :
Class A(Netid.hostid.hostid.hostid) : 1.0.0.0 to 126.0.0.0
Class B(Netid.Netid.hostid.hostid) : 128.0.0.0 to 191.0.0.0
