A certain couple tells you that they have two children, at least one of whom is a girl. What is the probability that they have two girls?
Answer / Digvijay Singh
The probability of having two girls given that at least one girl exists can be calculated as follows: The probability of a boy and a girl for the first child is 1/2 (boy) * 1/2 (girl) = 1/4. The probability of two girls for the first child is 1/2 (girl) * 1/2 (girl) = 1/4. Since the couple already has at least one girl, the probability of having a boy and a girl for the second child is 0. So, the probability of having two girls is the sum of probabilities of two girls for the first child and both being girls for both children, which is (1/4) + ((3/4)*(1/2)) = 5/8.
