i definitely don't agree with shivaji's point of view.
it's been asked that how many HDDs can be connected to an IDE.
In general there are two ports available for connection per
BUS wire. So only a max of two (2)HDDs could be connected at
a time to an IDE.
Upto machine with 865 motherboard... two IDE ports are
available. Remember, the HDDs should be a PATA, (Not a SATA).

actually last time i got a motherbord where u will be able
to connect 6 hard disks but not secondery IDE which are----
primary master
primary slave
sata1
sata2
sata3
and
sata4

we can connect upto 7 hard drivers minimum of 4 ata and
3sata discs

Accoding to up to 845chipset.we can connect 4 hardisk,now at
present latest mother board we can connect up to 6
harddisk,how means
