What do location area mean? Why do we need them?
Answer / Gaurav Aggarwal
Location Area (LA) refers to a geographical area covered by a set of Location Area Identities (LAI). It is used by the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) network to keep track of the location of mobile devices. The LA changes when a mobile device moves to a different cell site. We need them because they help the network to efficiently manage the resources, such as radio channels and database storage, while maintaining connectivity with the mobile device during its movement. This reduces call drops and improves overall system performance.
