in many plants xylem parenchyma and ray parenchyma cells
develope ballon like protrusions into tracheary
elements.such growths are called tyloses or tracheal plugs.

tyloses are formed by the enlargement of the pit membranes.

they often block the lumen of xylem elements.

tyloses commonly occur in the wood of gymnosperms.

their formation may be induced in many plants by wounding.
