pop 3 stands for postoffice protocol version 3.it is used in a sender mail adapter.it is used to read the mail.its a client/server protocol in which email is received & held for you in internet server.pop3 is designed to delete mail on the server as soon as download it.
imap4 is an email protocol which is sometime used instead of pop3 protocol.with using imap4 we store the mail on the server.imap4 provide the user more capabilites for retaining email on server.its thought of as a remote file server.
