Is it like GSM is used for backbone comm in LTE??

Ok.. I know that but i want to know exactly like in future,
do we require to replace the Base Station in case of LTE or
Wimax. As already we have Base Station installed all over
the country.
As it would increase the overall cost of implementation also.
