What is configuration management?

Answer Posted / george nace

Configuration Management (CM) is a management discipline
that is used to establish and maintain the integrity and
control of software and hardware systems and products
throughout their lifecycle. This may include version
identification, documentation, source code, hardware
platform, software build processes, tools, patches, testing,
and bug tracking systems. For complex systems and products
individual components within the system may have their own
configuration management system and interdependencies. There
are both open source and commercial tools to assist with
enterprise configuration management. For a brief overview of
CM see the Wikipedia entry:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Configuration_management
