If you join the mid points of all four sides, there will be 4 squares inside which are of equal size. So area of one of such square will be total area / 4 which is A/4

look at da square as a division of 8 smaller triangles. 2
of the triangles may form the smallest inner shaded square.
da square is 1/4th of the whole square.
thus the area of the shaded square is minimum A/4.
