If you had an infinite supply of water and a 5 quart and 3
quart pail, how would you measure exactly 4 quarts?

Answer Posted / nick

Fill 5 quart pail with water and pour into 3 quart pail so
that 2 qts remains in the 5 qt pail. Dump the 3 qts.
Transfer the 2 qts to the 3 qt pail. Fill the 5 qt pail with
water. Displace the 5 qts of water with the volume of the 3
qt pail provided it fits. Now dump the 2 qts in the 3qt pail
into the 2 qts in the 5 qt pail to get 4 qts.
