Why do we not feel the enormous weight of the atmosphere
above our heads ?

I don't think that quite answers the question. The pressure
of water is the same on all sides at 30,000 feet deep, and
you certainly would feel that, except you would be crushed
into jelly in a microsecond.
So, the question remains... better answer please.
