The umbilical cord is a flexible, flexible structure that connects the developing fetus to the placenta. It contains three blood vessels: two arteries (one carrying deoxygenated blood from the fetus and one carrying oxygenated blood from the placenta) and one vein (carrying oxygen-depleted blood back to the placenta). The functions of the umbilical cord include providing nutrients, removing waste products, and facilitating gas exchange between the mother and developing fetus.
