How do you interpret peripheral blood smears and bone marrow biopsies to assist in diagnosing hematologic disorders?
Answer Posted / Deepshikha Singh
Interpreting peripheral blood smears and bone marrow biopsies involves examining the cells for abnormalities. In a peripheral blood smear, abnormalities may include an increased number of immature or abnormal white blood cells (such as in leukemia), low red blood cell count (anemia), or abnormal platelet morphology (thrombocytopenia).
In a bone marrow biopsy, the presence of abnormal cells, such as blast cells (in leukemia), low or high numbers of certain types of cells (such as in myelodysplastic syndromes), or infiltration by non-hematologic cells (such as in lymphoma) can indicate a hematologic disorder.
