Anaphylaxis is a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction that can occur within minutes of exposure to an allergen. Symptoms may include hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, and shock. Anaphylaxis occurs when the immune system overreacts to an allergen, releasing large amounts of chemicals such as histamine, leukotrienes, and prostaglandins. These chemicals cause blood vessels to widen (dilate), leading to a drop in blood pressure and difficulty breathing. If not treated promptly with epinephrine, corticosteroids, and other medications, anaphylaxis can be fatal.
