Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is a type of antibody involved in immediate hypersensitivity reactions, such as allergies. It primarily binds to the surface of mast cells and basophils, causing their degranulation upon antigen binding. This results in the release of histamines and other inflammatory mediators that produce symptoms of an allergic reaction.
