begins protein catabolism by hydrolysis of the peptide bonds
that link amino acids together in the polypeptide chain.

Classification

Proteases are currently classified into six groups:

* Serine proteases
* Threonine proteases
* Cysteine proteases
* Aspartic acid proteases (e. g., plasmepsin)
* Metalloproteases
* Glutamic acid proteases
