Heavy water, or deuterium oxide (D2O), is used as a moderator in nuclear reactors because it has a higher neutron slowing-down probability than light water (H2O). This means that the neutrons lose their energy more efficiently when they collide with heavy water molecules. By slowing down the neutrons, they are able to sustain a controlled chain reaction in the reactor, making it possible to generate power or produce nuclear materials.
