Explain the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors?
Answer Posted / Purushottam Das
Intrinsic semiconductors are pure silicon or germanium which have equal number of electrons in the valence band and holes in the conduction band at room temperature, making them neutral. They conduct electricity only when heated (Thermal Agitation). Extrinsic semiconductors, on the other hand, are impure semiconductors that have been intentionally doped with either a pentavalent or trivalent impurity to create more electrons or holes respectively, increasing their ability to conduct electricity even at room temperature.
