It is the reduced form of glucose (produced by aldose
reductase) and can be converted to fructose (by sorbitol
dehydrogenase) in sperm cells where fructose is the
preferred energy source; In hyperglycemia, sorbitol may
accumulate in liver cells causing swelling and liver damage.
