What is the difference between living and non-living things?

Living organisms are characterized by being able to grow, reproduce, respond to their environment, adapt to change, maintain homeostasis, and have a life cycle. Non-living things do not possess these characteristics and include inanimate objects such as rocks, water, and furniture.
