Describe the process of Actinium extraction from its primary sources and how it's obtained for various applications.

Answer Posted / Chandrakant Mani Pathak

Actinium is not found in nature in a pure state but is found in small quantities in uranium ores and thorium minerals. The extraction process involves first separating the host elements, followed by the isolation of Actinium through chemical reactions. One method involves reacting Uranium oxide with nitric acid to form uranyl nitrate, which is then reduced with sodium borohydride to produce Uranium metal. This Uranium metal is then bombarded with neutrons in a nuclear reactor to induce fission and produce Actinium.
