Define respiratory quotient?

Answer Posted / Shyama Nand Kumar

The Respiratory Quotient (RQ) is a ratio that compares the amount of carbon dioxide produced by an organism to the amount of oxygen consumed during respiration. It is usually calculated as the volume of CO2 produced divided by the volume of O2 consumed, and its value is typically between 0.7 and 1.0 for most animals, depending on whether they primarily use carbohydrates (RQ=1) or fats (RQ<1).
