What is the difference between xylem and phloem?

Answer Posted / Mrinal Kaushick

Xylem and phloem are both complex tissues found in vascular plants, but they have distinct functions. Xylem transports water and minerals from the roots to other parts of the plant (upwards), while phloem transports sugars and nutrients produced by leaves downwards towards the roots. Xylem consists of tracheids, vessels, and xylem fibers, while phloem consists of sieve tubes, companion cells, phloem fibers, and phloem parenchyma.
